Illinois State Representative Mike Coffey said on May 31 that families in Illinois are experiencing increasing unaffordability due to higher taxes, rising costs, and a growing state government. Coffey said, “Affordability has meant higher taxes, higher costs, and bigger government. We can not tax our way into a prosperous future, and it’s clear that the pockets of Illinois taxpayers are being drained continuously every year by a growing state government.”

Coffey said House Republicans are working to provide real relief by proposing legislation aimed at making life more affordable for working families.

Coffey was elected as a Republican to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 95th House District, replacing previous state representative Tim Butler, according to the Illinois General Assembly.

The issue of affordability remains central for many residents across the state as lawmakers debate fiscal policy measures.
