Illinois lawmakers will consider House Bill 4471, which would restrict the sale of Glock pistols in the state, according to an announcement on May 19. The bill is scheduled for a vote in the House Gun Violence Prevention Committee on Wednesday, May 20 at 2 p.m.
The proposed legislation has drawn attention because it targets Glock switches, which are already illegal under current law. Supporters of gun rights argue that banning the sale of Glocks will not address violent crime because criminals do not follow existing gun laws.
“Glock switches are already illegal and criminals don’t follow existing gun laws anyway. Banning the sale of Glocks will do nothing to stop violent crime,” said Illinois State Representative Charles E. Meier.
Meier called for those who support Second Amendment rights to oppose HB 4471 by filing witness slips against the measure before its committee hearing. He encouraged public participation by stating: “I encourage all Second Amendment supporters to make your voices heard by filing witness slips in opposition to HB 4471.”
Meier, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 109th House District, replacing previous state representative David Reis, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
Observers say that if passed, this legislation could have implications for firearm sales and ownership within Illinois.
