The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has issued the first license under a new pathway for internationally trained physicians to practice in Illinois. This move is part of an ongoing effort by the Pritzker Administration to address healthcare staffing shortages across the state.
“Today marks the beginning of what we hope will become the standard among states in not only alleviating the strain being caused by healthcare staffing shortages but also lead to a greater appreciation of the tremendous contributions immigrants make every day to the state and the country,” said IDFPR Secretary Mario Treto, Jr.
The new licensing pathway allows international medical graduates to provide care within Illinois, aiming to expand access to healthcare services for residents. The IDFPR oversees professional licensing and regulation throughout Illinois, including healthcare professionals, as outlined on its official history page. The agency’s responsibilities include protecting consumers, supporting career opportunities, and maintaining stability in professional services sectors, according to its mission statement.
Established in 2004 through an executive order that consolidated previous regulatory bodies, IDFPR regulates various entities statewide such as banks and professionals in fields like real estate and healthcare (official website). The department has also implemented other regulatory measures in response to changing state laws over recent years.
By opening this new licensing route for internationally trained physicians, Illinois aims both to strengthen its healthcare workforce and recognize the role of immigrant professionals within its communities.
