The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s golf team, ranked No. 12 nationally, began its pursuit of the Big Ten Championship on May 1 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon. The tournament runs through May 3 and features all 18 Big Ten men’s golf programs.
The event is significant as Illinois seeks its 14th league championship in the last 17 years and its 21st overall conference title. The team’s consistent performance highlights its role in enhancing the athletic heritage at the University of Illinois while promoting values such as team spirit and individual excellence, according to the official website.
This year’s tournament takes place on Witch Hollow Course, a classic-style layout designed by Bob Cupp. The competition consists of three rounds over three days with live scoring available via Clippd Scoreboard. Sunday’s final round will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network starting at 4:30 p.m. Central Time.
Illinois’ lineup includes Dane Huddleston, Ryan Voois, Max Herendeen, Trey Marrion, and Freddie Turnell with Jake Birdwell as an alternate. Four players have previous experience in this championship: Voois and Herendeen have competed twice before; Birdwell tied for third last year to earn All-Big Ten honors; Marrion also participated last season.
Head coach Mike Small leads the program which operates under NCAA Division I guidelines within the Big Ten Conference according to the official website. Under Small’s leadership since the 2008-09 season, Illinois has won or shared thirteen conference titles including a record eight consecutive championships from 2015 to 2023.
