Illinois men’s gymnastics advances to NCAA team finals with season-best score

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Championships team finals after achieving a season-high score of 319.658 on April 17 at State Farm Center.

This advancement highlights the team’s competitive strength and their ability to perform under pressure in national events. During the qualifying session, Illinois secured third place behind Stanford and Michigan, surpassing Penn State, Army, and Navy. Notable performances included Preston Ngai’s 13.733 on still rings and Garrett Schooley’s vault score of 14.500, marking his ninth consecutive meet scoring at least 14.0.

Other strong contributions came from Sam Phillips with a season-best parallel bars routine earning him fourth place, while Brandon Dang delivered a pivotal pommel horse routine scoring 14.733—the highest of the night—to clinch Illinois’ spot in Saturday’s finals.

The Fighting Illini men’s gymnastics program competes under NCAA Division I regulations as part of the university’s athletics system according to the official website.
