The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced on May 8 that its renewal website is now open for physicians to renew their medical and controlled substance licenses. The deadline for renewal is July 31, 2026.

This process affects all Illinois physicians who must renew their licenses every three years. Physicians are required to pay a $543 renewal fee and attest to completing 150 hours of continuing medical education. For a controlled substance license, the fee is $5 per year, totaling $15 for the three-year cycle. Renewals will be processed through the ILES platform, which has been used previously by the department.

A new option allows retired physicians to place their active licenses in “volunteer status” without paying the standard renewal fee. To do this, they must print out a Request for Volunteer License Status application, fill it out, and mail it directly to IDFPR at P.O. Box 7450 in Springfield, Illinois. The department notes that those choosing volunteer status should not use the online portal but instead submit paperwork by mail.

There are also updates regarding electronic prescribing requirements under recent amendments to the Illinois Controlled Substance Act (720 ILCS 570/311.6). Starting January 2024, prescribers issuing more than 150 controlled substance prescriptions annually must submit them electronically unless they qualify for an exemption due to low volume or economic hardship. Physicians seeking these exemptions need to complete an attestation during license renewal; those claiming economic hardship must upload proof of a waiver from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services related to Medicare Part D Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances.

Physicians with questions about license renewal are encouraged by IDFPR to email the department using “LICENSE RENEWAL ASSISTANCE” as the subject line in all caps. Additional support is available from ISMS Health Policy Research and Advocacy team via email.
