The Illinois Police Officers Memorial Ceremony took place in Springfield on May 7, honoring law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty, including those lost in 2025. The event included a squad car procession from the Illinois State Fairgrounds, an interfaith service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the Capitol to pay tribute to fallen heroes.
The annual ceremony is held on the first Thursday in May at the Illinois Police Officers Memorial on the state Capitol grounds. During this year’s event, officials honored several officers who were added to the memorial for their sacrifice. Officer Krystal Rivera of the Chicago Police Department and Detective Tim Jones of the Park Forest Police Department were among those recognized for dying in service during 2025.
Paul C. Jacobs, Illinois State Representative for District 118, said: “Thank you to all who have served our community and made the ultimate sacrifice protecting families, and visitors to our state.”
The ceremony also highlighted support for survivors—the families of those killed while serving as law enforcement officers. The Illinois Police Officers Memorial Committee was established in 1985 with a mission to maintain this memorial and ensure continued recognition for those lost while performing their duties.
Jacobs is a Republican elected to represent Illinois’ 118th House District in 2023 after replacing previous state representative Patrick Windhorst, according to the Illinois General Assembly.
As each year passes, organizers say that remembering these sacrifices remains important not only for honoring individuals but also supporting their loved ones.
