The Illinois Policy Institute announced that Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s recent focus on national media interviews has prompted questions about whether building a 2028 presidential profile is taking precedence over Illinois-focused accountability.
According to a review by Capitol News Illinois of public records and campaign data, Pritzker participated in approximately 100 one-on-one interviews in 2025, with about 81% conducted with national media, podcasters, influencers, or entertainment hosts. This leaves around 19% for Illinois-based outlets. The analysis highlights that in previous years, the governor’s interviews were more heavily skewed towards local media.
Pritzker officially launched his third-term gubernatorial campaign on June 26, 2025, beginning with a statewide tour in Chicago. Multiple media outlets have noted the historical significance of this campaign since Illinois does not impose term limits on governors; however, three-term governors remain uncommon. The announcement also coincided with ongoing speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2028.
On August 10, 2025, during an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Pritzker did not completely dismiss the possibility of running for president in 2028 when questioned. This was perceived as a departure from his earlier “Illinois first” stance and further fueled discussions about his national ambitions. His increasing presence on national television and podcasts has added to this speculation.
The Illinois Policy Institute is known for its research and advocacy for free-market solutions aimed at enhancing government efficiency, reducing taxes, and fostering economic growth within the state. It regularly publishes reports focusing on state spending, budget transparency, and fiscal responsibility to identify areas of waste and suggest reforms such as spending caps and improved grant oversight.
