Illinois ranks 24th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in this year’s American Dream Prosperity Index (ADPI), a study that ranks states on societal inclusiveness, economic innovations and workforce health and education.

The Prairie State ranked 24th in the “Empowered People” category, which includes educational opportunities, public health and the ability of people to reach their potential in the workplace. In the “Inclusive Societies” category – which consists of concepts such as social cohesion and safety and security –  Illinois ranked 26th, according to the study sponsored by the Legatum Institute Foundation and the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream.

Illinois also finished 24th in the “Open Economies” metric, which measures state economies on whether they are open to competition, encourage innovation and investment, and promote trade and inclusiveness.

The ADPI found that prosperity has increased across the U.S., with the exception of North Dakota, in the latest study. But rising gun crimes in all but six states have taken a toll on Americans’ sense of security, according to the ADPI, while Americans’ mental health has worsened in all the states.
