Illinois State Representative Mike Coffey said on Apr. 16 that new data from the Internal Revenue Service shows Illinois experienced the third largest loss of resident income through moves to other states in 2023. Coffey said this trend is a significant problem for the state.
Coffey said public policy has led to a high cost of living, which is pushing people to leave Illinois for more affordable places. He called for immediate action, saying, “We must provide relief NOW to encourage investment and growth in our state…read more.”
Coffey attributed the state’s population decline to high taxes, corruption, and burdensome regulations. He said these issues are causing residents to move elsewhere. According to Coffey, “The population decline in our state is caused by high taxes, corruption, and burdensome regulations and all these issues drive people to more friendly states.” He also criticized Democratic lawmakers for focusing on spending projects rather than addressing what he described as core problems.
Coffey was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 95th House District in 2023 after replacing Tim Butler, according to available information.
The issue of population decline has implications beyond lost tax revenue; it can affect economic growth and public services across Illinois.
