Gov. Bruce Rauner went back on his word and has forced Illinoisans to start paying for abortions regardless of their personal beliefs, Illinois Right to Life said in an email recently.
“Right now, Illinois Right to Life and pro-lifers throughout Illinois can only feel betrayed and deeply saddened for the thousands of additional unborn babies’ lives that will be lost each year because of his action,” the group’s president, Rosemary Hackett, was quoted in the email as saying. “We are beyond disappointed with a governor who is willing to ignore the voices of his state’s citizens and every member of his political party, and expand abortion in Illinois at taxpayers’ expense.”
On Thursday, Rauner signed into law an expansion of abortion coverage in Illinois, requiring Medicaid and state insurance to pay for abortions beyond those done in cases of rape or incest, or if the mother’s life or health is considered to be in jeopardy.
In the email, Regina D’Amico, program manager for Illinois Right to Life, said the group is not giving up despite Rauner’s action.
“They don’t know what they’ve got comin,” D’Amico wrote. “We are not going anywhere. Illinois pro-lifers are a different breed: we are fighters. No matter how many extreme laws they will try to pass, the pro-abortion forces in our state cannot expand abortion if we can make it unthinkable in our communities first. And we’ve already begun.”
