The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team achieved a 16-4 run-rule win against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on April 14 at Illinois Field.
The result is significant as it improves the Illini’s record to 19-16 overall and highlights their strong home performance this season, now standing at 10-4. The game also showcased notable individual achievements and offensive production, including a season-high four home runs by the team.
Freshman AJ Putty led the offense with two home runs, becoming the first Illinois freshman since 2019 to hit multiple homers in a single game. Putty went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. J.R. Nelson added his second home run of the year, while Jack Zebig contributed his fourth homer of the season. Nick Groves recorded three hits and scored twice, and Will Johannes drove in three runs with two doubles.
On the pitching side, Sam Reed started for Illinois and allowed only one hit over two innings. Luke Weber earned his first win of the season by pitching three innings with two strikeouts. The bullpen closed out the final eight Cougar hitters to secure the seven-inning victory.
