Illinois softball lost to Penn State, 10-0, in the second game of their series on April 25 at Eichelberger Field in Urbana. The game ended after six innings.
The result is part of the University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Softball team’s ongoing season in the Big Ten Conference, where they compete at the NCAA Division I level according to the official website. The team plays its home games in Urbana and is known as the Fighting Illini.
Penn State took an early lead with a two-run homer by Breanna Hanik following a leadoff walk by Kaylie Walters. Karley Yergler retired three batters in order during the second inning, but Allison Oneacre hit a solo home run for Penn State in the third. Illinois threatened to score after Ava Moore reached base and advanced into scoring position, but could not bring her home.
Yergler started for Illinois on Senior Day and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking three. Abby Sabalaskey pitched 2.2 innings of relief, giving up one earned run on five hits and recording two strikeouts. Jackie Yeager went one-for-two with her third double of the season; Moore was also one-for-two for her twenty-third hit this year; Ellie Haggard added her thirty-eighth hit of the season going one-for-three at bat.
The Fighting Illini focus on intercollegiate softball competitions as part of their athletic program affiliated with the Big Ten Conference according to their official website. The program operates at NCAA Division I level and uses “Fighting Illini” as its nickname.
Illinois will finish its series against Penn State tomorrow, Sunday, April 26, at noon Central Time at Eichelberger Field. The team will also welcome participants from Tom Jones Challenge League during this event.
