Illinois softball lost to Penn State, 6-1, in the first game of their series on April 24 at Eichelberger Field in Urbana. The Fighting Illini now hold a record of 14-34 overall and 3-15 in Big Ten Conference play.
The outcome is significant as it continues a challenging season for Illinois, which competes at the NCAA Division I level and is a member of the Big Ten Conference, according to the official website. The team plays its home games in Urbana and represents the University of Illinois athletics program under the nickname Fighting Illini.
In Friday’s game, Penn State took an early lead with two runs in the first inning after base hits from Kaylie Walters and Allison Oneacre. Illinois pitcher Danika Frazier held Penn State scoreless over three innings before Brenna Hanik hit a two-run home run for Penn State in the fifth. Eileen Donahue responded with a solo home run for Illinois in the sixth inning—her twelfth this season—while Ellie Haggard added a base hit but was left stranded after a double play ended the inning. “Donahue now has 12 home runs on the year and 35 RBI, both team bests,” according to postgame notes.
Penn State added insurance runs late with Brooke Klosowicz hitting a solo shot and Macy Chamberlin driving another run with a sacrifice fly. Taylor Porter recorded her third hit of the season as a pinch hitter for Illinois but could not spark further offense before Penn State closed out its win.
Frazier started for Illinois, pitching six innings while allowing three earned runs, walking three batters, and striking out one. Adisyn Caryl went one-for-two at bat with her eighth double this year—a mark tied for most on the squad alongside Skylar Brennan.
The Fighting Illini will face Penn State again on Saturday at Eichelberger Field. The game will be broadcast on Big Ten Network beginning at 1 p.m., following pre-game events including what organizers call “the World’s Largest Softball Tailgate” outside Eichelberger Field from 11 to 1 p.m., featuring live music and food trucks. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day honoring Reese Hunkins, Gabrielle Debevec, Christina Crawford, Karley Yergler, and Alaina Miller for their contributions to Illinois softball.
The University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Softball program participates in intercollegiate competitions within NCAA Division I athletics under its well-known nickname—the Fighting Illini—as reported by their official website.
