Illinois softball lost to Maryland, 5-1, in the opening game of their series at Maryland Softball Stadium on April 17. The Fighting Illini are now 12-32 overall and hold a conference record of 2-13 in the Big Ten.

The result highlights the ongoing challenges for Illinois during this season as they compete in intercollegiate play at the NCAA Division I level, according to the official website. Both teams started quietly before Maryland took an early lead with four runs in the first inning, helped by an error and timely hitting from Zayda Rocke, Anna McGowan, and Caroline Fox.

Delaney Mosley notched Illinois’ first hit in the third inning. Alaina Miller also singled, but Illinois could not capitalize on runners on base. In the bottom half of that inning, Maryland loaded the bases again and added a fifth run after a walk to Fox.

Eileen Donahue provided Illinois’ only run with her tenth home run of the season leading off the fourth frame. Despite loading the bases later that inning with hits from Keirys Click and Ady Kiddy—both recording hits for consecutive games—the Illini were unable to add more runs. Pitcher Karley Yergler threw a complete game with three strikeouts while allowing one earned run.

According to the official website, Fighting Illini is used as a nickname for University of Illinois athletics teams who play their home games in Urbana, Illinois. The women’s softball program participates within both NCAA Division I competition and as part of the Big Ten Conference.

Looking ahead, Illinois will face Maryland again on Saturday for game two of their series at Maryland Softball Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with streaming available on B1G+.
