Illinois softball defeated Maryland, 5-4, on Apr. 18 after a seventh-inning rally that tied the series at one game each. The victory came during an away game for the Fighting Illini, who compete in the Big Ten Conference at the NCAA Division I level, according to the official website.

The outcome is significant as it marks Illinois’ thirteenth win of the season and improves their conference record to three wins and thirteen losses. The team focuses on intercollegiate competitions and holds its home games in Urbana, Illinois, as reported by the official website.

In Saturday’s contest, sophomore catcher Jackie Yeager hit her third home run of the season to help tie the score early. Freshman pitcher Abby Sabalaskey earned the win after pitching 1.2 innings in relief and allowing only one hit. Eight out of nine starting batters recorded hits for Illinois.

Skylar Brennan went three-for-five with one RBI and raised her batting average to .341 this season. “Her last outing with three hits was February 13 against Binghamton,” noted postgame information from Illinois Athletics. Yeager finished two-for-four with two RBIs and now has three career home runs.

Ava Moore also contributed by going two-for-four at bat; she has now recorded multi-hit games six times this year. Keirys Click was hit by pitch for a tenth time this season, tying her for eighth on Illinois’ single-season list alongside Jordan Vickery (2021).

The Fighting Illini serve as the nickname for University of Illinois athletics teams according to their official site. The women’s softball program operates at NCAA Division I level within intercollegiate competitions in line with its affiliation to the Big Ten Conference.

Illinois will conclude its conference series against Maryland on Sunday, April 19 at 11 a.m., with streaming available on B1G+.
