Illinois softball defeated Indiana State 9-5 on April 21, marking head coach Tyra Perry’s 300th win leading the program. The game took place at Eichelberger Field in Urbana, Illinois, where Megan Nuechterlein earned the victory as starting pitcher and freshman Brooke Stang recorded a perfect day at the plate.
This milestone is significant for both Perry and the University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Softball team, which competes in intercollegiate softball within the Big Ten Conference at the NCAA Division I level, according to the official website. Achieving such a number of wins highlights Perry’s tenure and impact on a program focused on high-level competition.
The contest began with Illinois taking an early lead after home runs by Eileen Donahue and Keirys Click. Indiana State tied the score in the third inning with key hits from Morgan Goodrich and Madison Poulson, followed by a three-run homer from Claire Connelly. However, Illinois regained control through an RBI single from Skylar Brennan in the fourth inning and extended their advantage with contributions from Stang and teammates Ellie Haggard and Ady Kiddy.
Nuechterlein notched her third win of the season after pitching ten starts this year. Danika Frazier entered as relief for three innings to secure her first career save. Donahue’s home run was her eleventh this season, surpassing last year’s total of ten homers; she now has nine multi-RBI games this year. Click added her sixth home run of the season.
With this result, Perry also celebrated reaching 700 career coaching wins earlier in February. The Fighting Illini nickname represents all University of Illinois athletics teams, according to their official website.
Looking ahead, Illinois will host Penn State for its final home conference series from April 24-26 at Eichelberger Field. Saturday’s game will be broadcast nationally on Big Ten Network while other games are available via streaming platforms B1G+. Fans are invited to attend events including Senior Day celebrations and what is described as “the World’s Largest Softball Tailgate” outside right field before Saturday’s matchup.
