Illinois State Representative Daniel Swanson attended the Illinois Special Olympics competition at Galesburg High School on Apr. 27.
The event featured an opening ceremony and the lighting of the Olympic torch, which Swanson described as a highlight of the occasion. He said, “The Special Olympics opening ceremony and lighting of the Olympic torch is always a highlight. I have developed so many friends and enjoy watching the athletes compete.” Swanson also thanked those who contributed to making the event possible, stating, “Thank you to all the volunteers, coaches, parents and staff who make this such a great annual event. Also, thank you to Smithfield for preparing a tasty sandwich.”
Swanson was elected as a Republican to represent Illinois’ 71st House District in 2023 after Donald L. Moffitt stepped down from his position according to Ballotpedia.
The annual competition brings together athletes from across Illinois for sporting events and community engagement.
Swanson’s participation highlights ongoing support from local officials for inclusive sports programs in Illinois.
