The Illinois State baseball team lost 1-0 to Murray State on April 18 at Johnny Reagan Field, dropping their record to 22-16 overall and 6-8 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

This game was significant for the Redbirds as it highlighted a strong pitching performance despite the defeat. Redshirt sophomore Carson Cormier pitched seven scoreless innings, marking his longest career outing and recording a personal best of 13 strikeouts. This achievement made him the first Redbird since Tyrelle Chadwick to have at least twelve strikeouts in a single game.

Throughout the early innings, Illinois State had several opportunities to score. In the third inning, walks by freshman Brayden Zilis and senior Josh Outlaw put two runners on base, but Murray State managed to get out of trouble without allowing a run. Similar situations occurred in subsequent innings with junior Graham Mastros reaching scoring position due to an error and both Mastros and senior Nolan Barry advancing on a wild pitch in the seventh inning. However, each time Murray State prevented any runs from scoring.

The game’s only run came in the eighth inning when Murray State loaded the bases with singles. A hit-by-pitch with two outs brought home what would be the winning run for Murray State. In their final attempt during the ninth inning, Barry singled and stole second base for Illinois State but was left stranded as Murray State secured the win.
