The Illinois State track and field team broke three school records and achieved several top-five finishes at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, according to an April 24 announcement.
The event highlighted the team’s competitive progress as athletes set new benchmarks in both track and field events. The performance comes as Illinois State Redbirds continues to build its reputation within collegiate athletics.
Head coach Jeff Bovee said, “Overall, it was a phenomenal day. I’m very excited. There is some great competition here with Arkansas being one of the best facilities in the country. We’re fortunate to come here and be able to make the best out of it and this experience.” Zach Paul finished second in the men’s 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.19 seconds, breaking the school record. Enyinnaya Nwagwu Jr. also made program history by moving into tenth place all-time with a personal best of 10.46 seconds in the same event.
Lindsey Miller placed fifth in the women’s 100-meter dash and later posted a season-best mark in the 200 meters. Macee Rivers won the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a wind-aided time that moved her up program rankings, while Maggie Reed finished fourth in the steeplechase.
In relay action, Nwagwu, Paul, Jake Welch, and Evan Watson broke another school record by more than a second with their performance in the men’s 4×400-meter relay. Seth Nelson led field results by breaking his own pole vault record at 5.30 meters; Rex Hallam set a personal best for third place in long jump; Voldy Makabu earned bronze for high jump; Kaden Stewart placed fourth; Victor Byaundaombe took third for triple jump; Jacob Klink improved his shot put mark while Jo Atkins finished fifth; Keira Fax secured bronze on the women’s side for shot put.
