Illinois State University’s Trey Thomas completed the first day of the decathlon at the Gibson Invitational on April 16, finishing in fifth place with a total of 3,533 points after five events.
The results mark an important step for Illinois State Redbirds as they continue their season in NCAA Division I track and field competitions. The team’s ongoing participation in such events supports both athlete development and the university’s competitive standing, according to the official website.
Thomas achieved a season-best high jump of 1.96 meters and set a personal record with a long jump of 6.30 meters. He also finished seventh in shot put with a distance of 11.67 meters, placed ninth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.27 seconds, and eighth in the 400-meter race at 51.94 seconds to complete his first day.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational held in Azusa, California, two more Redbird athletes competed Thursday night. Mattison Plummer participated in the open section of the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase and finished twenty-first with a time of 10:18.78. Astrid Van Breedam ran in the collegiate section and placed sixty-sixth at 10:44.93.
