Illinois State Representative David Friess called on May 14 for the state to participate in the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program. Friess said that Governor Pritzker should focus on providing Illinois families with more educational resources.

The statement highlights a push for Illinois to give families additional options and support in education. The proposal centers on joining a federal initiative designed to assist students and their parents.

“Governor Pritzker should put his obsession with opposing President Trump aside and focus on ensuring Illinois families have every possible tool to help their children succeed in the classroom and beyond. That means opting into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit program,” Friess said.

Friess was elected as a Republican representative to the Illinois State House in 2023, replacing Nathan Reitz, according to Ballotpedia.

The call from Friess reflects ongoing debates over how states can best use federal programs to support education. Observers will be watching whether state leaders take action regarding participation in this tax credit initiative.
