Illinois State Rep. Chris G. Miller said on May 5 that the state is losing residents and jobs due to current fiscal policies. The statement was made in a Facebook post referencing an analysis from the Illinois Policy Institute on income trends.
“Our state is falling behind because of radical policies and endless tax hikes on families and businesses. Illinois is bleeding population and jobs as our state becomes less competitive due to JB Pritzker’s love for spending more, borrowing more, and taxing more,” Miller said.
According to the IPI analysis, per capita personal income in Illinois grew about 35% since 2019, while the national figure exceeded 37%. During this period, Illinois ranked 39th nationally in income growth and trailed all neighboring states. State tax collections increased by 46% over the same timeframe.
Another analysis from the Illinois Policy Institute shows the state recorded a net domestic outmigration of 55,609 residents along with $6 billion in adjusted gross income lost in 2023. Higher-income filers represented a significant share of those leaving the state, which affects local tax revenues and regional economies across counties.
Miller represents the 101st District in the Illinois House and was first elected in 2019. He chairs the Illinois Freedom Caucus and resides in Hindsboro, according to information from the Illinois General Assembly.
