Illinois State softball lost to DePaul, 6–5, on Apr. 21 at Cacciatore Stadium in Chicago during its last non-conference midweek game of the season.
The result brings Illinois State’s overall record to 25–16. Both teams had seven hits each, but the Redbirds left ten runners on base compared to six for DePaul. The game is part of Illinois State Redbirds’ schedule as they compete in NCAA Division I events across various regions, according to the official website.
Illinois State started strong by scoring two runs in the second inning through a combination of walks and an error. DePaul quickly responded with a run in their half of the inning and took control with a three-run home run in the third inning. Two more runs from DePaul in the fourth extended their lead.
In the fifth inning, Illinois State rallied with five hits that resulted in three runs. Taylor Liebelt, Ella Boyer, and Julia Larson each contributed RBI singles during this comeback attempt. Despite these efforts, Illinois State was unable to score again over the final two innings.
Pitcher Hannah Meshnick took her tenth loss of the season after allowing six runs (five earned) over 3.2 innings pitched. Gracelyn Kemp followed with 2.1 scoreless innings out of relief for Illinois State.
The Redbirds are set to host their last home series next weekend against Murray State at Melinda Fischer Field at Marian Kneer Stadium, with senior recognition scheduled postgame Saturday.
