Illinois State softball split a doubleheader against Belmont on April 17, winning the first game 2–1 and dropping the second in extra innings, 3–2, at E.S. Rose Park in Nashville.
The games were closely contested, with both teams showing strong pitching and timely hitting. These results are important as Illinois State Redbirds compete in NCAA Division I events across various regions, according to the official website.
In the opening game, Bella Atkinson led Illinois State’s offense by going 3-for-4 with a home run and a double. Paige McLeod pitched a complete game for her eighth of the season, allowing one run on five hits and striking out three batters. “Illinois State opened the scoring in the first inning, as Bella Atkinson delivered a two-out solo home run,” according to the team’s report. The Redbirds added another run when Tatum Wolford drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning. Despite Belmont cutting into the lead later that inning, McLeod kept them scoreless over the final frames.
Game two saw Hannah Meeks hit a two-run homer early for Illinois State but Belmont tied it quickly and ultimately won after nine innings following key hits and a wild pitch that brought home the deciding run. The Redbirds managed six hits but struggled with runners in scoring position.
The team is linked to Illinois State University and utilizes facilities such as OSF HealthCare Athletics Training Center for student-athlete preparation, according to their official website. Support from resources like news updates, schedules, rosters and fan engagement helps bolster their athletic community.
Looking ahead, Illinois State will conclude its series against Belmont tomorrow morning at E.S. Rose Park. Continued support through initiatives like the Redbird Athletics Excellence Fund aims to enhance competitiveness and recruitment for all teams within their program.
