The Illinois State track and field team will split its roster this week, with 12 athletes traveling to Azusa, California for the Bryan Clay Invitational, while the rest of the squad heads to Terre Haute, Indiana for the Gibson Invitational from April 16-18.
These events bring together large fields of competitors. The Gibson Invitational will feature over 30 teams including Indiana, Northwestern, Notre Dame, several Missouri Valley Conference schools such as Evansville and Southern Illinois, and host Indiana State. Meanwhile, more than 4,000 athletes representing over 400 universities are expected at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The Redbirds recently delivered a strong performance at the Illini Deca-Jam last Saturday with seven event victories. Macee Rivers won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 13.67 seconds; Kristyn Johnson finished first in the women’s 100-meter dash with a time of 11.82; Maggie Reed led a sweep of the top four spots in the women’s 1500 meters by winning in 4:34.08; Quinn Davis took first place in the men’s 5000 meters at 14:54.82; Kiera Fax secured victory in women’s shot put with a throw of 14.02 meters; Kaden Stewart cleared a height of 2.11 meters to win men’s high jump; and Astor Snaider captured men’s triple jump honors with a leap of 14.56 meters.
Several athletes also made moves on Illinois State’s all-time lists: Isabelle Hemmen improved her fifth-place mark in program history for pole vault by clearing 3.97 meters while Adi Scott now ranks tenth all-time for hammer throw after recording a mark of 54.38 meters.
Three school records have been tied or broken this outdoor season—Seth Nelson set a new men’s pole vault record at Joyce Morton-Kief Invite (5.28m), Becca Heitzig broke women’s record for the1500m (4:14.79) at Pepsi Florida Relays on April 4, and Zach Paul, Jake Welch, Reece Curtis and Enyinnaya Nwagwu tied men’s relay record (3:06.51) during that same meet.
The U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association featured several Redbird event groups among national leaders as of April 14: men’s shot put group ranked sixth nationally; men’s high jump group was tenth; women’s squads placed within top fifty across multiple disciplines including middle distance runs and throws.
