The Illinois State track and field team will participate in the Badger Challenge hosted by the University of Wisconsin on April 30. The event is set to take place at the McClimon Track Complex, with field events starting at noon Central Time and track events beginning at 4 p.m.
This competition comes after a strong showing by the Redbirds at the John McDonnell Invitational, where several athletes broke school records and achieved top-five finishes. Enyinnaya Nwagwu Jr. recorded a personal best in the 100-meter dash, while Lindsey Miller improved her standing in school history for the same event. Macee Rivers won the 100-meter hurdles, moving up to third all-time for Illinois State. Other notable performances included Maggie Reed’s fourth-place finish in the steeplechase and Rex Hallam’s third place in long jump with a personal-best mark.
The team has seen four outdoor school records tied or broken this season, including three during last weekend’s competitions. Zach Paul set a new record in the men’s 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.19 seconds, while Paul also contributed to breaking the men’s 4×400 meter relay record alongside teammates Enyinnaya Nwagwu Jr., Jake Welch, and Evan Watson. Seth Nelson broke his own pole vault record with a clearance of 5.30 meters, and Becca Heitzig twice improved upon her own women’s 1500-meter record earlier this month.
Several Redbird event groups have been ranked among national leaders according to recent U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings released on April 28: The men’s shot put group is ranked tenth nationally; high jumpers are twentieth; sprinters are thirty-ninth; while women’s distance runners also feature prominently among national squads.
