Illinois will implement new product bans starting January 1, affecting the sale and distribution of certain fluorescent lights and the use of single-use plastic toiletry bottles in small hotels.
The state will prohibit the sale and distribution of most screw-base or bayonet-base compact fluorescent lights beginning January 1, 2026. The law includes exceptions for specific uses such as photocopying, sunlamps, medical or veterinary purposes, pharmaceutical purposes, motor vehicles manufactured before January 1, 2020, and other specified purposes. A further ban on most pin-base compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
Additionally, under the Small Single-Use Plastic Act, Illinois hotels with fewer than 50 rooms will be restricted from providing single-use plastic toiletry bottles to guests after January 1, 2026 unless requested by the guest. Larger hotels have been subject to this restriction since July 1, 2025. If a guest requests a single-use plastic toiletry bottle, hotels may provide it.
Hotels found violating these rules will first receive a written warning. Subsequent violations can result in fines up to $1,500.
