The University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Softball team will play its final home game of the spring season against Valparaiso on April 29 at Eichelberger Field, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. Central Time and streaming available on B1G+.
This matchup marks an important moment as Illinois concludes its home schedule before heading into the last series of regular season games. The Fighting Illini compete in intercollegiate softball within the Big Ten Conference at the NCAA Division I level, according to the official website.
In recent action, Illinois secured a win over Indiana State by a score of 9-5, highlighted by freshman Brooke Stang’s two hits and two walks. Eileen Donahue and Keirys Click each hit home runs during that victory. Megan Nuechterlein earned her third win of the year as starting pitcher, while Danika Frazier recorded her first career save. Against Penn State in conference play, Donahue added two more home runs and Ellie Haggard had a hit in every contest.
Donahue now has thirteen home runs this season, tying her for ninth place on Illinois’ single-season list alongside Jenna Hall (2006) and Stephyn Abello (2017). Last year she led the team with ten homers. Sophomore Keirys Click has been hit by pitch eleven times this year—tied for seventh most in program history—and ranks fourth in conference and forty-third nationally for that statistic.
On pitching staff performance, Yergler leads with a WHIP of 1.73 and fifty-seven strikeouts across more than one hundred innings pitched; Abby Sabalaskey holds a record of seven wins and seven losses along with two saves. At the top of Illinois’ batting order are juniors Skylar Brennan (.324 average) and Adisyn Caryl (twenty-five runs), who lead nearly all offensive categories.
Head coach Tyra Perry reached her seven-hundredth career coaching win earlier this season against Providence and recently notched three hundred victories as head coach at Illinois after defeating Indiana State at Eichelberger Field.
Valparaiso enters Wednesday’s game with an overall record of nineteen wins and twenty-nine losses, including seven victories in Missouri Valley Conference play. Madison Vrastil leads their offense with a .369 batting average while Mack Gallagher has contributed ten home runs this year. Pitcher Sydney McDermott has posted nine wins along with one hundred three strikeouts so far this season.
Historically, Illinois is undefeated against Valparaiso since their first meeting in April 2000; last year’s matchup ended with a five-to-one victory for Illinois featuring strong performances from Karley Yergler (winning pitcher), Eileen Donahue (grand slam), and Adisyn Caryl (home run).
After hosting Valparaiso, Illinois will finish its regular season on the road against Indiana from May 1 through May 3.
The University’s women’s softball program continues to focus on intercollegiate competition within NCAA Division I as part of its ongoing athletic tradition under the nickname Fighting Illini according to information provided by the official website.
