Overnight and long-term ramp closures will continue throughout August as part of the Illinois Tollway’s ongoing work to reconstruct and reconfigure the I-290/I-88 Interchange at the Tri-State Tollway (I-294). The closures, which include detours at the Roosevelt Road Interchange, are necessary for ramp and bridge reconstruction, pavement construction, and utility work.
A single lane reduction is scheduled on the ramp connecting eastbound Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) to southbound I-294. This lane reduction is expected to last through the end of the year. Delays are anticipated during this period.
Construction signs and electronic message boards will be installed in advance to notify drivers about upcoming closures and detours. Up-to-date information can be found in the Illinois Tollway’s Daily Construction Alert. All scheduled work depends on weather conditions.
Throughout August, temporary overnight closures with posted detours will take place at multiple interchange ramps linking I-294, I-290, I-88, and Roosevelt Road. Detour maps are available on the I-290/I-88 Interchange Project page.
During the week of August 4, traffic on the ramp from eastbound I-88 to southbound I-294 will shift and be reduced to a single lane. Overnight lane closures are planned on southbound I-294 between 31st Street and Cermak Road to complete this shift. According to Illinois Tollway officials: “The lane reduction and traffic shift will allow the Tollway to safely accommodate traffic and provide a work zone between the ramp and southbound I-294 for reconstruction of the ramp and mainline lanes.”
The week of August 11 will see overnight closures with detours for bridge beam placement on York Road Bridge over eastbound I-88’s connection to southbound I-294 and York Road. During these closures:
“To access southbound I-294,eastboundI-88traffic will beroutedto eastbound I-290 through the Mannheim Road Interchange, then to westbound I-290 to access southbound I-294.”
“To access York Road, eastbound I-88 traffic will be routed via Midwest Road and 22nd Street to access York Road.”
Additionally, intermittent full overnight closures lasting 15 minutes each are planned for northbound I‑294’s connection to westbound I‑88 during that week.
Further overnight roadway lane closures on major routes including I‑294, I‑88, and I‑290 are also scheduled in August but should reopen before morning rush hour.
At Roosevelt Road Interchange beginning early August, overnight closures with detours are planned for ramps connecting eastbound Roosevelt Road (Illinois Route 38) with eastbound I‑290 due to bridge removal work. Traffic during these times will be rerouted via Mannheim Road.
Later in August there will also be intermittent full overnight closures—each up to 15 minutes—on Roosevelt Road at its intersection with southbound I‑294 for continued bridge removal operations. Ramp connections from northbound I‑294 to westbound Roosevelt Road may also close temporarily; drivers can use alternate routes via eastbound I‑290 and Mannheim Road.
These activities involve coordination among several local agencies including the Illinois Department of Transportation; Village of Berkeley; Village of Hillside; City of Elmhurst; Village of Oak Brook; Proviso Township; as well as local fire and police departments.
Drivers using Tri-State Tollway (I‑294) should note current mainline shifts:
• Southbound through traffic can use all lanes.
• Exiting vehicles toward eastbound I‑290 or westbound I‑88 must enter two right local lanes north of St. Charles Rd.
• Express lanes remain open for those continuing toward Cermak Rd., Ogden Ave., or I–55.
• For Ogden Avenue exits specifically: use two right local lanes south of Cermak Rd.; left express lanes serve only those heading toward I–55.
Motorists may consider alternative routes such as westward Jane Addams Tollway (I–90), or taking eastward I–290 then switching onto Veterans Tollway (I–355) if feasible.
Additional details—including maps—are provided on Illinois Tollway’s website under Projects > the official project page.
In 2025 construction at this interchange includes further rebuilding bridges over major roads like Roosevelt Rd., Butterfield Rd., Canadian National Railroad tracks, Electric Ave., plus additional noise wall installation along with drainage improvements.
This effort forms part of a larger $4 billion Central Tri-State Tollway Project aimed at updating infrastructure between Balmoral Avenue and 95th Street—a corridor serving more than 220,000 vehicles daily—to relieve congestion as part of Move Illinois Program.
Work zone speed limits remain enforced around-the-clock across all active construction areas: “Construction zone speed limits are in effect in all construction zones 24/7,” an official statement notes. On I–294 specifically a 45 mph limit applies throughout construction season.
“The Illinois Tollway reminds motorists that the ‘Move Over Law’ requires motorists to change lanes or
to slow down and proceed with caution when passing any vehicle on the side of the road with hazard
lights activated. If you see flashing lights ahead, please move over or slow down.”
Illinois State Police maintain zero tolerance regarding speeding or failure-to-move-over violations within work zones: “The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $250 with up to a $25,000 fine
and a 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker.” Penalties for failing move-over requirements may reach $10,000 fines or longer license suspensions depending upon severity.
The Move Illinois program represents a $15 billion capital initiative intended over sixteen years both modernize key highways—such as recent upgrades completed along Jane Addams Memorial—and link regional economies while supporting job creation across northern Illinois.
