The University of Illinois men’s and women’s track and field teams recorded seven new top-10 program marks on April 17 during the second day of the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, Florida.
These achievements are significant as they reflect strong performances by both individual athletes and relay teams. The results also secure national rankings for several Illini competitors, highlighting their competitiveness at the NCAA Division I level.
In Gainesville, JaiCieonna Gero-Holt finished first in the heptathlon with 5,870 points—the second highest score in school history—while Meagan Humphries took second with 5,847 points. Both scores rank among the top three nationally this season and qualify Gero-Holt and Humphries for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Gero-Holt placed second in javelin with a throw of 39.56 meters (the ninth-best mark in program history), while Humphries won the long jump event with a leap of 6.27 meters (also ninth-best all-time).
Other notable performances included Jacob Cookinham’s shot put throw of 19.00 meters (fourth-best in school history) and Jonathan Kapitolnik’s debut high jump clearance at 2.15 meters (fifth-best). At Wake Forest, Pol Molins ran a time of 3:39.26 in the 1500m race—the third-fastest ever by an Illini athlete—which currently ranks tenth nationally for this season.
The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women’s track and field program participates in both indoor and outdoor competitions according to its official website. The team competes as part of the Big Ten Conference and enhances the university’s athletic heritage. Based in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and competing at NCAA Division I level, it supports student-athletes balancing academics with sports commitments according to university sources.
The Illini track and field teams will continue competition at these invitationals on April 18.
