The University of Illinois men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships from May 15 to 17 at the Nebraska Outdoor Track in Lincoln, according to a May 12 announcement. A total of 21 men and 22 women will represent Illinois at this conference event.
The meet marks an important step in the postseason for both squads, with athletes aiming to secure spots at upcoming NCAA competitions. The women’s team is led by Sophia Beckmon, who is the reigning indoor national champion in the long jump and currently holds the second-best outdoor mark this season at 6.79 meters. JaiCieonna Gero-Holt has scored 5,870 points in the heptathlon, ranking fourth nationally, while Meagan Humphries follows closely behind with a fifth-place score of 5,847 points.
Other notable performances on the women’s side include Phethisang Makhethe’s hammer throw of 68.73 meters (seventh-best nationally) and Jordan Koskondy’s mark of 67.54 meters (tenth). Siun Quinn recently achieved a personal best high jump of 1.85 meters, now ranked ninth nationally. Mia Morello rounds out top Illini performances with a pole vault clearance that ranks tenth in the country.
On the men’s team, Jip de Greef leads all decathletes nationwide with a score of 8,039 points. Andreas Hantson holds eleventh place with his decathlon score of 7,733 points. Viktor Morozov’s triple jump distance places him eleventh among collegiate competitors.
Looking ahead to NCAA competition, athletes who finish among the top forty-eight in their region will advance to preliminary rounds later this month in Fayetteville, Arkansas; from there, top performers move on to nationals in Eugene, Oregon next month.
