As summer festivities approach, the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC) is advising residents to prioritize safety when participating in seasonal celebrations involving fireworks. Fireworks are often a highlight of summer events, but the ILCC emphasizes the importance of attending professional displays organized by local authorities. The purchase or personal use of “consumer fireworks” is illegal in Illinois due to potential dangers.

While sparklers and worm/snake pellets are not classified as consumer fireworks and may be permitted under local ordinances, caution is urged. The ILCC stresses that these items should only be handled by individuals who are sober, as they pose significant risks. The Illinois Office of the Fire Marshal highlighted that sparklers were the leading cause of burns and injuries in 2014.

Recent data from July 2024 indicates a worrying trend with a more than 48% increase in firework-related injuries compared to 2023. More than half of those injured reported multiple injuries, primarily first and second-degree burns and lacerations. Proper training for handling these explosives is crucial to avoid such incidents.

Lisa Gardner, Executive Director of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, stated: “It’s important to understand the serious risks that consumer fireworks present, a risk that increases significantly when alcohol is involved.” She added that staying alert helps ensure safe Fourth of July celebrations.

Spectators at local firework displays should maintain a safe distance from pyrotechnic activities to safeguard themselves and others involved in lighting them.

The mission of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission includes protecting public health and safety through regulation of alcoholic beverages and reducing youth access to alcohol. For more information about their work or to report concerns, visit www.ILCC.Illinois.gov.
