The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team defeated Augustana College, 5-4, in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Championship on May 9. The win marks the Titans’ third consecutive tournament title and secures their automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
This achievement is significant for Illinois Wesleyan, as it represents their 18th tournament championship in program history and their third straight appearance in the NCAA postseason. The Titans will learn about their placement in the national tournament during Monday’s selection show on NCAA.com at 11 a.m. Eastern Time.
Sophomore Grace Wilkens was recognized before the game with the CCIW Elite 26 Award, which honors student-athletes competing at the conference championship who hold the highest grade point average among eligible players. According to the announcement, “Wilkens is the third Titan to win the award, joining Madison Moore (2022) and Kennady Estes (2023, 2024, 2025). Furthermore, IWU has taken home the distinction every year since the awards creation in 2022.”
During Saturday’s game at Inspiration Field in Bloomington, Illinois Wesleyan came from behind after trailing Augustana by two runs late in play. Junior Mallory Holland started for IWU before Caroline Gatchell entered as relief and Gianna Certa closed out with back-to-back strikeouts to secure victory. Kelsey Bartels contributed two hits and two runs batted in while Riley McDoniel recorded her third multi-hit game of this year’s tournament.
The Illinois Wesleyan Titans Women’s Softball team competes at NCAA Division III level and holds membership in both intercollegiate athletics and within its conference structure according to its official website. Home games are hosted at Inspiration Field located in Bloomington.
Looking ahead, Illinois Wesleyan awaits its draw for national competition as it continues its season into another NCAA Tournament appearance.
