The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team ended its season on May 16 after falling to the University of Redlands in the Waverly Regional Championship. The Titans forced a decisive second game by defeating No. 2 ranked Redlands, snapping their opponent’s 30-game win streak with a 6-4 victory before losing the final contest by the same score.
The matchup held significance as it marked the end of an accomplished season for Illinois Wesleyan, which finished with a record of 31-15. The games also closed out the collegiate careers of several senior players who contributed to multiple conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances for the program.
In game one, Illinois Wesleyan took an early lead with key hits from Grace Wilkens, Kelsey Bartels, and Casey Wissmiller. Wissmiller drove in two runs with a single and later added another run-scoring hit. Senior Gianna Certa helped contain Redlands’ offense after Adyson Kim’s home run brought them closer. Caroline Gatchell secured her second save of the year by closing out the final three innings. “Leaving no doubt, Gatchell settled back in the circle and induced a scorcher to short,” according to Illinois Wesleyan University’s press release.
Game two saw Certa start strong on the mound before errors allowed Redlands to take control in the third inning. Despite efforts from Wilkens and Beckman at bat and defensive plays that limited further damage, Illinois Wesleyan could not overcome Redlands’ lead. “Gatchell took over and needed just one pitch in relief for the final appearance of her career to retire the Bulldogs on a 6-3 putout,” according to Illinois Wesleyan University’s statement.
The loss concluded notable careers for seniors Anna Beckman, Gianna Certa, Caroline Gatchell, Claire Post, and Casey Wissmiller—players who were part of four regular season College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championships as well as three NCAA Tournament appearances.According to the official website, Illinois Wesleyan Titans Women’s Softball competes at NCAA Division III level within intercollegiate athletics based in Bloomington, Illinois.
Looking ahead, this marks another successful chapter for a program that has achieved three seasons with more than thirty wins over four years.
