Illinois Wesleyan women’s lacrosse falls to Carthage College in home matchup

The Illinois Wesleyan University women’s lacrosse team lost to Carthage College, 22-2, on April 18 at Tucci Stadium in Bloomington. The defeat brings the Titans’ record to 5-9 overall and 1-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, while Carthage improves to 12-2 (3-0 CCIW).

This result is significant as it comes during conference play for the Titans, who compete as part of intercollegiate athletics and maintain membership in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, according to the official website. The team features student-athletes from freshman through fifth-year classes.

Senior Sadie Newton led Illinois Wesleyan with one goal and one assist. Senior Sarah Riepe scored the other goal for the Titans, with sophomore Sophie Shore adding an assist. Shore also led with three draw controls and three caused turnovers, while Newton and Riepe each contributed two draw controls and two caused turnovers on defense.

Goalkeeper Marli Brown played during the first and fourth periods, making two saves but allowing eleven goals. Freshman Allison Vervynck took over for the second and third periods, recording two saves along with a caused turnover and a ground ball.

The game saw Newton score off a pass from Shore early in the second period to put Illinois Wesleyan on the board. Despite efforts including a point-blank save by Vervynck that gave possession back to IWU before halftime, Carthage maintained control throughout much of the contest. In closing moments, Newton assisted Riepe for a late goal.

Illinois Wesleyan will continue its season at home against Augustana College on Wednesday, April 22 at Tucci Stadium. The program has previously recorded notable victories such as a 23-0 win over Illinois Institute of Technology in 2025 according to its official website.
