Illinois wheat producers have approved the initiation of a wheat check-off program in the state. This decision was made through a vote, with 207 producers in favor and 69 against, leading to the introduction of a voluntary program imposing a 1.5 cent per bushel assessment rate.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture (IDOA) announced the results after verifying the ballots and certifying the statewide count. The Illinois Wheat Checkoff Committee, in collaboration with the IDOA, will soon set up procedures for electing members to the Illinois Wheat Development Board for the coming fall, with the program starting on January 1, 2026.
The Illinois Wheat Development Act supports the development of wheat markets, enhances research and production, and helps the industry navigate changing market dynamics. IDOA Director Jerry Costello II highlighted the importance of agriculture, stating, “Agriculture is our state’s #1 industry, and we are proud to be the #11 producer of wheat in the nation, producing 60.2 million bushels in 2024.” Costello added that the wheat check-off “will foster continued growth, positioning Illinois as a global leader in wheat production.”
