James Friel, 90, Former Chicago Firefighter, Passes Away; Visitation and Funeral Details

James J. Friel, 90, of Chicago, IL, passed away on June 21, 2025. He served as a proud Chicago firefighter for over 60 years, was a member of Local 2, the Brotherhood of the Barrel, and the Gaelic Fire Brigade. Friel was known for his social nature and love for spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his children James, Stephen, David, Kathleen, and Jennifer, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friel was the husband of the late Ruth Friel and the son of James and Anna Friel. Funeral arrangements include visitation on June 26 at Vandenberg Funeral Home in Tinley Park, with a Funeral Mass at St. George Church on June 27, followed by interment at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
