Paving work on Jefferson Avenue and Walnut Street is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on April 16, according to an announcement from the City of Peoria. Striping work will also start on Adams Street, with lane and parking restrictions affecting several downtown areas.

The upcoming roadwork is part of ongoing efforts to improve local infrastructure as the Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way Conversion Project enters its final months. The city advises drivers that delays of up to 30 minutes are expected during paving operations.

According to the city’s release, periodic lane closures will occur on Walnut Street between S.W. Adams Street and S.W. Jefferson Avenue throughout the day as crews progress with paving activities. The two far-left lanes on Jefferson Avenue from the Interstate 74 overpass to N. William Kumpf Boulevard will remain closed to all traffic while work continues.

Parking restrictions will be in effect in several locations: the south side parking lane on Adams Street from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to Hamilton Boulevard will be closed for striping; similar restrictions apply along Jefferson Avenue between Interstate 74 and N. William Kumpf Boulevard; no on-street parking will be allowed on Walnut Street between S.W. Adams Street and S.W. Jefferson Avenue while meters are bagged, with vehicles parked in restricted areas subject to towing.

Drivers entering or exiting both the Jefferson Parking Deck and County of Peoria Parking Deck should expect significant delays due to construction activity, particularly when using these facilities during peak hours. To avoid congestion, drivers are encouraged by city officials to use alternative routes such as S.W. Adams Street for accessing parking decks or Madison Avenue/Monroe Street for reaching Twin Towers Parking Deck via Fulton Street.

The city reminds motorists that lane closures and parking restrictions may change daily based on project needs; caution is urged within work zones where workers or equipment may be present, with flaggers assisting traffic flow as necessary.

Daily updates regarding project progress are expected until resurfacing concludes later this summer.
