The City of Peoria announced on April 17 that resurfacing work on Jefferson Avenue will move from the south side to the north side starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 20, weather permitting. The project will bring lane and parking restrictions between the Interstate 74 overpass and N. William Kumpf Boulevard.
This change is part of ongoing improvements in the area as part of the Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way Conversion Project, which is expected to be completed by early summer. Officials said striping work will also continue along Adams Street’s south side parking lane from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to Hamilton Boulevard, resulting in additional parking closures during this phase.
Motorists are advised that significant delays are likely and alternative routes are strongly recommended while these changes are in effect. According to city officials, “NO ON-STREET PARKING WILL BE ALLOWED IN THESE AREAS. ON-STREET PARKING RESTRICTIONS WILL REMAIN IN EFFECT WHILE METERS ARE BAGGED.” Vehicles parked in restricted areas may be subject to towing.
On April 20, both far-right lanes on Jefferson Avenue between Interstate 74 and N. William Kumpf Boulevard will be closed to all traffic. The north side parking lane along this stretch will also be closed, as well as the south side parking lane on Adams Street from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to Hamilton Boulevard; however, restrictions there will be lifted once work is finished.
Drivers exiting the Twin Towers Parking Deck should expect delays due to construction activity nearby and are encouraged to use Madison Avenue or Monroe Street for access via Fulton Street instead. Additional off-street parking remains available at Niagara and Jefferson decks for those affected by street closures.
Lane closures and parking restrictions may change daily as progress continues toward completion of resurfacing work downtown.
