The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on May 17, with Jonathan Kapitolnik winning the men’s high jump title and the women’s team securing second place, their best finish since 2013.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the program, highlighting its progress in recent years. The women’s team scored 92 points in an 18-team field, a result that reflects ongoing improvements within the squad. The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women’s track and field program participates in both indoor and outdoor competitions, belongs to the Big Ten Conference, competes at the NCAA Division I level, aids student-athletes in managing academics and sports, enhances the university’s athletic heritage, and is based in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, according to the official website.

Director of track and field Petros Kyprianou said, “This was a good weekend for Illinois track and field. I want to shoutout our three champions JaiCieonna Gero-Holt, Jonathan Kapitolnik and Luuk Pelkmans. Those three did an amazing job battling the high winds and adapting quickly. They all deserve those gold medals around their necks.” Kyprianou also said about his team’s progress: “I know we didn’t come out on top on the women’s side, but a second-place finish speaks volumes to what we are building here. The highest finish for us in 13 years and scoring 92 points in an 18-team field is nothing to hang our heads about. We continue to build and improve. I’m excited to get into my favorite portion of the season now with the NCAA Championships on the horizon.”

Kapitolnik cleared a height of 2.21 meters (7-3), marking it as one of his program’s top performances historically while becoming Illinois’ seventh individual high jump gold medalist at this event since records began. He said after his victory: “I feel great with my performance today. I arrived in the U.S. not too long ago. This is my first big competition. I didn’t do indoor, so it was really exciting for me to win this… In the end all you need is one good jump and here I am… Just go give your all and hope for the best.” Teammate Kennedy Ocansey also made it onto the podium by finishing seventh.

Other notable performances included Katharina Graman setting a wind-aided school record triple jump (13.57m) for silver; Grace Kombetto earning bronze in her debut season’s outdoor championships; Sophia Beckmon placing fourth with one of her school’s fastest-ever times; Viktor Morozov capturing silver in men’s triple jump; Jacob Cookinham taking sixth place shot put honors; Cody Johnston making his outdoor pole vault debut at sixth place alongside Brenden Vanderpool who finished eighth.

Looking ahead, Illinois will compete next week at NCAA West Preliminaries from May 27-30 as they continue their postseason campaign.
