Kirby School District 140 announced on Apr. 17 the release of its latest KSD 140 Connection newsletter, highlighting important deadlines, summer activities, student achievements, and upcoming events.

The newsletter provides families and community members with information about the district’s registration discount deadline on April 30, as well as details about summer sports camps and reminders regarding district-issued devices. It also recognizes student accomplishments and encourages community engagement through upcoming dates.

Kirby School District 140 serves Cook County and includes Christa McAuliffe School, Fernway Park Elementary School, Helen Keller Elementary School, John A. Bannes Elementary School, Millennium Elementary School, Prairie View Middle School, and Virgil I. Grissom Middle School according to the Illinois Report Card. The district enrolled 3,606 students in the 2019-2020 school year and provides education for grades pre-kindergarten through eighth grade in Tinley Park according to state data.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), Kirby has a teaching staff of 258 with an average salary of $68,179 before pension contributions; women make up over ninety percent of teachers in the district. ISBE reports that no teachers had more than ten absences during a school year as detailed by state records.

The student body is composed of approximately seventy-nine percent White students; Hispanic students represent just over eight percent; Asian students make up four percent; Black students comprise three percent as reported by ISBE. In terms of finances, Kirby spent $20,628 per student in the year 2020 for a total expenditure exceeding $74 million according to financial reports.

Chronic truancy remains low within Kirby compared to statewide figures: eighteen chronically truant students were recorded in the district during the last reporting period—about half a percent—while Illinois’ average is nearly ten percent according to ISBE data.

With ongoing communication efforts like this latest newsletter issue and continued focus on both academic achievement and operational transparency, Kirby School District 140 aims to keep families informed while supporting its diverse student population.
