Kirby School District 140 announced on May 15 that it is continuing its tradition of celebrating students by sharing a collection of candid photos each week. The district said these images capture the spirit and passion of its students.
The weekly wrap-up matters as it offers families and the community a glimpse into daily life at the district’s schools, fostering engagement and pride in student achievements. “Each week, Kirby School District 140 celebrates the talents and passion of our students by posting a collection of candid photos. Every picture tells a story, and together, these snapshots capture the spirit of Kirby School District 140. #KirbyONE40 #EveryChildEveryDay,” according to the district.
Kirby School District 140 represents Cook County and includes Christa McAuliffe School, Fernway Park Elementary School, Helen Keller Elementary School, John A. Bannes Elementary School, Millennium Elementary School, Prairie View Middle School, and Virgil I. Grissom Middle School, according to the Illinois Report Card. The district enrolled 3,606 students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade during the 2019-2020 school year and is located in Tinley Park within Cook County.
There are currently 258 teachers in Kirby School District 140 earning an average salary of $68,179 before their taxpayer-funded pension contribution; women make up over ninety percent of this group while men account for just under ten percent. There are no teachers with more than ten absences per year according to the Illinois State Board of Education.
Demographically, Kirby’s student body is composed primarily of White students (79.5 percent), with Hispanic (8.2 percent), Asian (4.4 percent), and Black (3.3 percent) communities also represented according to ISBE. In terms of financials for the year 2020, spending per student was $20,628 for a total expenditure exceeding $74 million.
The chronic truancy rate at Kirby was reported at just half a percent—18 chronically truant students out of all those enrolled—which remains well below Illinois’ statewide average rate for chronic truancy cases according to ISBE.
