The Illinois Tollway announced on March 26 that the ramp connecting northbound Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to I-190 and River Road will be reduced to a single lane starting the week of March 30 and continuing into April. This lane reduction is part of ongoing plaza improvements at the O’Hare Interchange, and delays are expected.

This change is important for drivers who use this interchange, as it may affect commute times and traffic patterns in the area. The construction work aims to improve safety, traffic flow, and mobility through updated infrastructure.

Electronic message signs and construction signage will be installed in advance to alert drivers about the closures and changes in traffic patterns. Up-to-date information will be available on the Illinois Tollway website’s Daily Construction Alert. All work is dependent on weather conditions.

Work at the plaza began in 2025 with efforts to remove existing toll plaza canopies and barrier walls while installing new monotube structures and tolling equipment. Additional improvements include ramp pavement, shoulder repairs, electrical upgrades, lighting enhancements, and new signage. The project is being coordinated with local agencies such as the Illinois Department of Transportation, Pace Suburban Bus, City of Des Plaines, Village of Rosemont, as well as local fire and police departments.

These improvements are part of two larger capital programs: Move Illinois—a 16-year $15 billion initiative—and Bridging the Future—a seven-year $2 billion plan approved by the Board of Directors in December 2024. These programs aim to modernize regional transportation infrastructure without using state or federal funds for maintenance or operations.

Drivers are reminded that construction zone speed limits are enforced around-the-clock. The “Move Over Law” requires motorists to change lanes or slow down when passing vehicles with hazard lights activated; penalties for violations can include hefty fines or jail time if workers are injured.
