Lawmakers announced on March 13 that Senate Bill 2762 would require insurance companies to cover medically prescribed seizure detection devices. The proposed legislation aims to improve the quality of life for individuals with seizure disorders by ensuring access to these devices.
The bill is considered important because seizure detection devices can help people with seizure disorders live as normal a life as possible. By mandating insurance coverage, supporters say more patients will be able to obtain the technology they need without facing financial barriers.
Senate Bill 2762 includes several provisions: it would prohibit insurers from requiring prior authorization for the devices, ensure that device selection is based on each patient’s circumstances and medical needs in consultation with their healthcare professional, and ban cost-sharing requirements related to coverage of the devices. The legislation has been assigned to the Senate Insurance Committee for further consideration.
Questions about the bill can be directed to Erin O’Brien, Senior Vice President of State Legislative Affairs at the Illinois State Medical Society, via email.
The proposal reflects ongoing efforts by lawmakers and advocates to address gaps in healthcare coverage for people living with chronic conditions. If passed, Senate Bill 2762 could set a precedent for similar measures in other states.
