The Saluki Athletics season continued into the summer as select Southern Illinois University track and field athletes competed at the NCAA West Regionals in Lafayette, Arkansas, according to a June 1 announcement.
Leah Thames was the highlight for Southern Illinois University as she advanced to the quarterfinals in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. During her performance, Thames set a program record in the 400-meter dash. In the quarterfinals, she placed eighth, securing her place at the NCAA Nationals scheduled for June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
Southern Illinois University Athletics teams participate at the NCAA Division I level and compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. The department oversees intercollegiate sports programs and utilizes facilities such as Banterra Center and Saluki Stadium. The university also maintains a Hall of Fame to honor outstanding contributors. The Salukis nickname is derived from an ancient Egyptian dog breed known for speed, grace, and endurance, according to the official website.
