Western Illinois University Leathernecks Women’s Softball defeated Lindenwood 11-3 in a run-rule victory on April 26 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
The game was significant for the Leathernecks as it marked their senior day and demonstrated their ability to respond to challenges late in the game. The win improves Western Illinois’ record to 13-29 overall and 8-15 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Payton Brown opened scoring with a sacrifice fly, giving Western Illinois an early lead. After Lindenwood tied the score in the fifth inning, Western Illinois responded with a six-run rally that included key hits from Sophia Sanchez, Maria Luna, Hannah Simpson, and Alijah Williams. The team continued its offensive surge in the sixth inning when Brown hit a two-run home run and RyLee German added a walk-off two-RBI single.
Libby Spaulding pitched four innings for the win, while Kaitlyn Green started with two scoreless innings. Offensively, Western Illinois collected nine hits and nine walks. Brown led with three RBIs; Luna and German each contributed two RBIs; Simpson had multiple hits as well.
