Lewis University announced on Apr. 16 that it will hold a Family Math Night for Fairmont School District 89 families. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lewis University’s De La Salle building on the second floor and is open to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
The event aims to engage families and students with mathematics in an interactive setting. Organizers have asked families to RSVP by April 21 using the provided form.
Fairmont School District 89 serves Will County and includes Fairmont School, according to the Illinois State Board of Education (source). The district enrolled 322 students during the 2019-2020 school year and offers education from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, as reported by the state board (source).
Demographically, Fairmont School District 89 consists of approximately 12.7 percent White, 38.5 percent Black, and 46 percent Hispanic students; Asian students make up about .3 percent of enrollment (according to ISBE). The district employed a total of thirty teachers earning an average salary of $47,800 before pension contributions in recent years; about eighty percent are women while nearly twenty percent are men. There were no teachers with more than ten absences during a school year (according to ISBE).
In terms of finances and attendance issues, Fairmont spent $21,521 per student in the year 2020 for a total expenditure of $6,929,762 (according to ISBE). However, chronic truancy remains a concern: ninety students were classified as chronically truant—defined as missing five percent or more of mandated school days without valid excuse—which represents about twenty-eight percent of enrolled students compared with a statewide average of less than ten percent (as reported by ISBE).
The upcoming Family Math Night provides an opportunity for families within this diverse district community to participate together in educational activities outside regular classroom hours.
