Western Illinois University announced on May 7 that Maleigha Huston has been named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Female Track Athlete of the Week following her performance at the Musco Twilight meet.
Huston received this recognition after winning the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:08.26, which is now the second-fastest in Western Illinois program history and currently leads all competitors in the Ohio Valley Conference this season. The award highlights both her individual achievement and her contribution to the team as they prepare for upcoming championships.
“We’ve been on a driven mission for the time Maleigha just ran, and I believe there is still more improvement to be had,” head coach Matt Rosado said. “With conference around the corner, the best is yet to come.”
The Leathernecks will compete next at the NIU Huskie Classic as they continue their preparations for the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships. The Western Illinois University Leathernecks Women’s Track and Field team participates in NCAA Division I competitions as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, operates from Macomb, Illinois, builds on a legacy of women’s athletics at Western Illinois since the early 1900s, earned All-Academic Team recognition from USTFCCCA in 2025 for student-athletes’ scholastic achievements, maintains a full roster including freshmen and upperclassmen athletes for 2025–26, and is affiliated with Western Illinois University as part of its broader athletics program, according to the official website.
Looking ahead, Huston’s performance sets an encouraging tone for both her individual prospects and those of her teammates as they approach key meets in their season.
