Block Club Chicago released on May 8 a collection of photographs documenting key events and moments across the city during the past week. The photos capture a range of activities, from major rallies to local school celebrations.
The weekly roundup highlights important happenings in Chicago neighborhoods. This includes civic demonstrations, wildlife sightings, cultural showcases, and milestones for local businesses and schools.
Among the notable moments was the annual May Day rally held at Union Park, where members of community groups, activists, and union workers marched through downtown streets. In another development for nature enthusiasts, piping plover Sea Rocket rejoined Imani at Montrose Beach while bald eagles were spotted soaring over the South Side. These wildlife events drew attention from bird watchers throughout the city.
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago hosted its Capstone Fashion Show titled ‘Fashion 2026: In Medias Res,’ featuring student designers on May 1. Meanwhile, Bridgeport’s Kimski restaurant marked its tenth anniversary as chef Won Kim prepared dishes alongside owner Ed Marszewski.
Other images showcased include former Mayor Lori Lightfoot and former Alderman Walter Burnett Jr. attending a construction milestone event for Bally’s Chicago Casino in West Town; Chatham residents rallying with Alderman Lamont Robinson to protest a planned Walgreens closure; students tending goats at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences; children playing at Garfield Park Conservatory’s renovated children’s garden; Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon conducting an election ballot lottery; teens customizing bicycles in Belmont Cragin; beachgoers enjoying North Avenue Beach ahead of expected thunderstorms; and several teachers and principals being honored with Golden Apple Awards for educational innovation.
